KTY: How can companies on the rise avoid some major pitfalls in the startup trenches?

G & S:

1) Don’t underestimate how much cash you’ll need to start the business.

2) Learn from other entrepreneurs’ mistakes.  There are three questions successful entrepreneurs constantly ask themselves:

  • How do I make money in my business?
  • What could I currently be doing better in my business?
  • How do I plan to grow my business?

3) Reduce the hubris immediately.  Your concept is not new.  There could always be someone in a garage in Bangladesh doing the same thing you are doing and they are about to explode in the marketplace.

4) Increase your BIQ immediately.  Your #1 priority is learning as much as you can about the business models that exist in your space but also in adjacent markets.

KTY: Great advice. Tell us, what was your worst moment and how did you overcome it?

G & S: Our worst moment…to be very honest, we have not really had a worst moment.  We have had some glitches in our radio show presentation.  But we attribute that to a learning curve and new technology.

KTY: If you could create an imaginary advisory board made of brilliant minds from the past and those currently alive and active today to guide you, who would you name to this board …and why?

G & S:

  • King David (Bible) – For all his faults and misjudgments, he was the consummate leader as it relates to the balance of spiritual life, humility and wisdom.  He is the only person in the Bible referred to “As a man after God’s heart”.  Wow, that’s got to mean something.
  • Peter Drucker – Love his management philosophies! We could learn more about our current and future business practices from his lessons.
  • John Maxwell – Leadership guru.  We can learn more and more about leadership as it relates to not only our business but about our family, employees, and the integrity we must exhibit as business leaders.
  • Jack Welch – Awesome business mind that we can learn much from.  Love his ideas that every facet of the business must create value; if it does not create value, cut it off.
  • Edward Deming – In a phrase – Continuous Improvement.  He is the father of it and what better way to improve your business than to learn from the master.

KTY:  Would you care to share some favorite and best advice with us today?

Family is your number one priority.  In order for any business to succeed your home life must have some balance and peace.

Keep focused on the best and not the good. The good is easier to attain than the best.  However, if you focus on what’s best for your business, although it’s harder and there are more obstacles in your way, the payoff is much greater.

Enjoy the process.  Entrepreneurship is not about arriving at a certain place and saying, “I made it”. It’s a process of discovery…of self and innovation, which is never-ending.  So enjoy the process!!

KTY: Thank you so much, Gerry and Steve, for sharing your thoughts and adventures along the start-up raod with us. Looking forward to seeing the continued growth of your unique concept around the globe!

Thanks Everyone for your visit. Come back again real soon for our upcoming interviews with:
